What to do when you get into an accident

Here are a few steps to help you manage your accident.

1) Make sure all parties involved are okay and not seriously injured, if anyone is hurt or injured immediately call the police.

2) If no one is hurt, exchange information with parties involved and witnesses, (persons in the vehicle cannot be used as witnesses).

3) If the car is immovable, call your insurance’s tow truck to move the vehicle to a safely secured and trusted body-shop you know of. If you let the police move your vehicle with their tow-truck, you will have to pay storage and transportation fees upon pick of your vehicle. However, if you have full coverage this should all be covered. Be wary if you have liability only!

  • If your car is drivable, take it to either your house or a trusted body shop, whichever is closer, if you have neither, then you may have to take it to the PCH Tow Yard.

4) When the vehicle is moved and you have left the scene of the accident, call your insurance to file a claim; detailing the accident and hopefully telling them about any witnesses. Filing a claim takes roughly around 10 minutes. Do not forget to ask about rental car coverage!  Your insurance agent will then proceed to instruct you with your best course of action.
